My two months progress since starting a design studio.
Main Post:
I hope you're well. It's been a cold few weeks for me. So far, I have:
- Sent 1000+ cold emails
- Only 20 people replied
- Of which only 6 scheduled a call
- 0 moved forward
- Started Google search ads
- 1 spam inquiry
Surviving on the spillover work from my past projects. Nothing solid has landed, and I am sure there’s something incredibly wrong that I am doing. I would love to get some suggestions and tips from people who have gone through this. I offer branding and web design to start-ups, 2019 - 2023 was pretty good, but it's been a pin-drop silence since Jan 2024, and keeping myself motivated is very tough.
Sorry if this is not the right place to cry and vent. :(
Top Comment: I sold my agency a long time ago and I am a consultant now so my knowledge might not be so up to date. I don't understand why so many people here think they can start an agency and generate leads with cold calling/emailing or Upwork. If you can do that, also any other random person can as well. Agencies grow from relationships. I am in my late 30s, worked in the industry since I was 20. I have director contacts who call me when they need something. Most of the work comes from relationships and good work. Also RFP's. Ads are super expensive for agencies, especially in the digital/programming/app/web dev space.
How much agency do you think the two Elizas of S&S, and Georgiana and Lydia in P&P had in their respective scandals / near-scandals?
Main Post:
In Regency times, women were blamed, probably disproportionately, if they consorted out of wedlock with a man, and we can see this in how both Elizas in S&S were ruined, Georgiana Darcy was nearly ruined, and the only thing that saved Lydia Bennet from ruination was her forced marriage with Wickham.
How much agency do you think they really have? Would the man not be the one to approach them first in a matter of elopement or seduction, and especially in the cases of Eliza the younger, Georgiana, and Lydia, the age differential (man in their mid- to late- 20s, young lady of 15 or 16) be sufficient to also create a power imbalance which makes it very difficult to say no?
Top Comment: I mean in a scale of 0 to 10 I'd say a 2. Young cosseted naive girls barely out into society really can not be expected to have any agency when preyed upon by experienced adult men, I only tip the scales slightly because they were willing even if they were lured away and lied to, but that's just my opinion
